I heard about turmeric everywhere. Studies were showing that it had an impressive list of benefits…and I couldn’t ignore it any longer!
I’ve been putting turmeric on pretty much all my savory food for the last 4 months, and I love it! Today is going to be a love letter to turmeric, the world’s most powerful herb!
3 Reasons Why I Started Taking Turmeric For Clear Skin
Turmeric contains a super powerful compound called Curcumin. Curcumin is responsible for sooooooooo many benefits…It even beats Prozac for depression!
Here are the 3 reasons why I eat Turmeric:
1. Anti-Inflammatory
The first and most important reason why I decided to take Turmeric is because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties.
Your body goes through a process of inflammation when it’s dealing (murdering) an intruder in your body, like bacteria, viruses, pathogens, toxins…
But there’s a huge difference between acute (short-term) inflammation and chronic inflammation. Acute inflammation is normal, and keeps you SAFE, without it you can even die from pathogens.
Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is long-lasting and can turn against your own body!
Acne-sufferers usually experience chronic inflammation due to many possible factors like insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance, and unhealthy lifestyle choices.
When your immune system is functioning properly and you get a clogged pore, then a pimple doesn’t even form. The clog just comes and goes without you even noticing it! A healthy immune system is like a silent killer, it knocks out the intruder without you needing to deal with any dead bodies.
When your immune system is compromised because of chronic inflammation, it destroys the intruder and the surrounding area with a big bomb…the clog gets attacked with white blood cells and cytokines, making the area swell and get red as the body battles with the “intruder”. You definitely notice the destruction because it’s in the form of a big swollen pimple, nodule, or cyst!
Therefore maintaining a healthy immune system by lowering inflammation is CRITICAL to clear skin.
And which magical, yellow, herb fights inflammation on the molecular level? Turmeric!
In fact, many studies compared turmeric to many anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drugs, and it fared betted and without any SIDE EFFECTS.
2. Antioxidants
Turmeric is an incredible antioxidant itself, and also stimulates the body’s own antioxidants and helps fight free-radical damage that leads to aging, acne, and other diseases.
Turmeric has an ORAC (Antioxidant potential) score of 127068, where one of my favourite health foods, broccoli, only has an ORAC score of 1510!
Acne-sufferers have less antioxidants than people with healthy skin, so increasing antioxidants is a powerful trick for clear skin!
Turmeric can protect you and your skin!
3. Improves Insulin Sensitivity
Insulin is an important hormone for clear skin. If you develop insulin resistance from consuming too much sugar, this makes your skin produce a ton of sebum.
Insulin spikes stimulate your sebaceous glands…Increased sebum means an increased probability of your pores clogging as the sebum exits your pore.
I wonder which herb can help with insulin sensitivity? Turmeric!
Turmeric is a total champ at reducing damage that insulin resistance can cause, and has even been shown to be 400 times stronger than a certain diabetes drug!
Other Turmeric Benefits
But if these reasons aren’t enough, turmeric also boosts brain function, prevents cancer, prevents Alzheimer’s disease, is an antidepressant, is into-aging, increases longevity…It’s a damn superhero herb!
How To Take Turmeric
The more turmeric the better…You can mega-dose on actual turmeric powder, and you’ll be more than fine!
The thing is, turmeric isn’t super bioavailable, so that means you need to take a lot of it in order to get all these awesome effects. But you can increase its bioavailability by pairing it with black pepper.
Man, your plate is going to be so much more fragrant now!
NOTE: Turmeric is a bright yellow color and can stain EVERYTHING, so be careful with your towels – or better yet get bright yellow kitchen towels.
For better turmeric bioavailability, you can also consider taking Curcumin capsules, but make sure they contain the compound piperine (from black pepper) to increase absorption.
Let me know what you think of turmeric!
